What is a Solar Tree, and when does it beat rooftop solar?

A canopy of solar panels on a single pole. Here is what it is, the sizes available, and when it is the smarter choice for your site.

A Solar Tree is a solar plant shaped like a tree: one steel column, with solar panels arranged as a canopy above. The ground below stays in use. People sit in the shade, cars park, events go on.

Standard sizes

ModelPanelsCanopy diameter
5 kWp9about 7.5 m
10 kWp18about 11 m
12 kWp22about 11 m
15 kWp28about 12 m
20 kWp36about 14 m

kWp means kilowatt peak: the plant's rated output in full sun. Final design depends on your site and soil, confirmed after a site survey.

When a Solar Tree beats rooftop solar

  • The roof is too small, shaded, leased or full. A Solar Tree needs no roof at all.
  • Land must stay usable. A ground-mounted plant blocks the land; a Solar Tree stands on one pole.
  • You want people to see it. On a campus, a plaza or a hotel lawn, it becomes a visible landmark for your sustainability work.

Rooftop solar is still the first choice when you have a large, free and sound roof. Many sites use both, as at PDEU.

Where Solar Trees work best

  • University and school campuses
  • Toll plazas and highway amenities
  • Public gardens, plazas and parks
  • Hotel and resort lawns
  • Corporate campuses and parking

A proven design

OORZI's Solar Trees are engineered and built by Imagine Powertree, which holds a world record for a 20 kWp single-pole Solar Tree. At PDEU in Gandhinagar, Solar Trees and rooftop solar keep the campus power cost 34% below grid for 25 years.

Do you have to buy one?

No. With OORZI the Solar Tree is installed, owned and maintained by us, and you pay only for the power it produces. See Solar Trees with OORZI.

Questions people ask

Does a Solar Tree need a roof?

No. A Solar Tree stands on a single pole with its own foundation, so it works on lawns, plazas, parking areas and campuses.

What sizes of Solar Tree are available?

Standard Solar Trees range from 5 kWp to 20 kWp per tree, with canopy diameters from about 7.5 m to about 14 m.

Is a Solar Tree better than rooftop solar?

It is better when the roof is small, shaded, leased or full, or when the land below must stay usable. With a large free roof, rooftop solar usually comes first.

Can I get a Solar Tree with zero investment?

Yes. With OORZI the Solar Tree is installed, owned and maintained by us, and you pay only for the power it produces.
